This technique may be helpful for minor jowls or sagging skin. One source describes its objective this way: “To develop a safe and effective method to lift the jowl either as a single procedure or combined with other rejuvenation methods, S-shaped incisions are marked and then cut from the area just in front of the tragus [the front part of the ear]” (Source: Dermatologic Surgery, January 2001, pages 18-22). Once the small S-shaped flap of skin is cut and lifted away from the face the skin is rejoined, tightened, and repositioned along with the underlying muscles and fat tissues. If necessary, excess fat can be removed from this area at the same time.
