Chemical peels

Many studies have shown chemical peels are useful adjuncts for the treatment of acne. But which type should you choose? Most physicians and aestheticians have a penchant for glycolic acid (AHA) or lactic acid (AHA) peels because of their popularity and well – marketed product lines often sold by physicians and aestheticians. Yet there is reason to consider a salicylic acid peel (BHA) over an AHA peel. The glycolic acid and salicylic acid peels are similarly effective, but research has shown the salicylic acid peel can have sustained effectiveness and fewer side effects (Source: Dermatologic Surgery, January 2008, pages 45-50).

Chemical peels do have shortcomings for treating acne. They are not cures, they must be done repeatedly, and they are expensive. Before choosing this option, all the other topical options should be exhausted.
