Carmindy Fan Q&A

Q: I get so confused when it comes to lining the eye with a brush. Any advice?

—Jessica, 26, Lake Villa, IL

A: Go for a flat, thin, angular brush. Choose one with natural bristles for a finer blend, and use it to apply powder eye shadow as liner or to apply cake, cream, or gel liner formulas. For liquid eyeliner, dab some on the back of your hand and drag the angle brush through it. That’s how we professionals create those perfect sweeps. If you mess up along the way, use a small – tipped concealer brush with a bit of foundation or concealer on it to erase any wayward streaks.

Q: I apply liquidfoundation with cosmetic sponges andfind it really covers my dark circles. Applying makeup with my fingers never worked as well. Do you agree?

—Carolyn, 56, Birmingham, AL

A: It’s truly a matter of personal preference. I apply my foundation with my fingers, then lightly buff it to a flawless finish with a nonlatex sponge. I then spot-conceal using a brush. But if sponges work best for you, go for it.

Q: How sharp should my eyeliner pencil be?

—Jessica, 30, Aurora, IL

A: Very sharp for precision application. If you want a smudgier look, roll the tip between clean fingers so it’s a little rounder. Remember to sharpen pencils before each use to keep bacteria at bay and ease your application.
