Savor Skin Care as a Beauty Ritual

What’s particularly thrilling about skin is how responsive it is to attention. Think of it as similar to a child—constantly changing and developing in lockstep with great nurturing, proper nutrition, and motherly protection. Your skin loves to be loved!

Embrace your skin care regimen as a time to care for your tender wrappings. We all know the steps, but they bear repeating because they work wonders when practiced religiously. Remember, you don’t have to pay outrageous prices for effective skin care products. Today’s drugstore brands feature many of the same active ingredients as boutique potions. What matters is making skin care a daily ritual you enjoy.

The tried-and-true basics:

• Cleanse with a gentle facial cleanser each morning, follow with a moisturizer suitable for your skin type, and add a topper of sunscreen. Many moisturizers now come with an SPF conveniently built right in. (Winter or summer, sunny or cloudy, sunscreen is mandatory.)

• Cleanse again at night, removing any stubborn makeup with makeup remover, and apply a replenishing night cream before bed. If you experience breakouts, bedtime is the right time to apply a drying solution to blemishes—gently, and no picking, please. Eye cream is another luxurious little treat to tap on before your beauty sleep. Finish with a slick of lip balm to maintain your dreamy pucker.

• Exfoliating your skin is the best way to keep it soft and evenly textured. I recommend exfoliating a couple of times a week with a mixture of your daily cleanser and white sugar to rid your face of dead skin cells, dry patches, and built-up sebum. Your skin will be smooth as glass, and makeup will blend easier.

For a healthy glow, you have to nourish your insides as well. Eat a lot of fresh fruits, vegetables, and foods containing Omega-3 oils like salmon. Pop a multivitamin or anti-oxidant supplement every day for extra insurance. Breathe deeply to relieve stress and calm your spirit. Drink plenty of water and choose green tea over coffee or sodas. Make sure to exercise regularly to get the blood pumping. This helps remove impurities and aids in cell renewal.

• Most important, praise your skin for doing such a fantastic job. It literally keeps us together, ladies. That’s the kind of skin-deep beauty to appreciate!
