STYLE BASICS

Work with what you’ve got (I’m talking about your body). The biggest bargain in any clothing is that you can use it to make figure flaws disappear. It’s not what you wear; it’s always how you wear it.

Big hips? Look for low-waisted pants. Coming right under the belly button, this cut will visually shrink hips. It also will make your torso look longer, and slims even further.

Hide thighs under a basic shirt-dress. It will glide right over those flaws. Just be sure to pick a fabric that’s not too stiff (creating bulkiness), or too clingy.

Minimize a large bust by keeping brighter colors below the waist. Then the eye will naturally fall there.

Look slimmer all over by keeping with solid colors, including belts, scarf, etc.

NOBODY’S PERFECT AND YOU CERTAINLY DON’T HAVE TO ADVERTISE YOUR LESS-THAN – PERFECT BODY PARTS.

Create an optical illusion with lines.

Vertical lines add height. Horizontal lines add width.

GET THE LOOK YOU WANT

SWEATERS

Trim your waist with a snug belted or wraparound cardigan that defines the waist. Avoid oversized sweaters.

Get a flat tummy with a full-length sweater worn over a matching shell. Avoid body-hugging lightweight fabrics.

Trim hips with a brightly colored sweater that ends just above the hip. Avoid sweaters that fall just at or below the hip.

Instant Chic

I Pull a look together in seconds with a cardigan. It adds instant polish to slacks, skirts, and jeans. Duster length is the most flattering and versatile.

BRING ATTENTION TO THE UPPER HALF OF YOUR BODY WITH INTERESTING NECKLINES THAT DRAW THE EYE THERE.

BUY A CHEAP DENIM SKIRT AND CUT THE BOTTOM AT AN ANGLE OR STRAIGHT ACROSS AT THE HEM. THEN WASH AND DRY IT SO IT FRAYS. YOU’VE GOT INSTANT VINTAGE DENIM APPEAL.

PANTS

For a flatter tummy, look for flat-front pants that have a bit of Lycra. Avoid pockets and pleats.

For slimmer hips go for wide-leg pants in lightweight fabrics. Avoid prints or side pockets.

For longer legs choose pin stripes or slightly flared styles. Avoid cuffs or full legs.

For a smaller waist look for boot cut and a lowered waistband. Avoid baggy styles or high waists that end above the natural waistline.

Jeans Camouflage

Pick slightly relaxed dark denim jeans. If there are pockets on the jean, they should be close set. Don’t wear your jeans too tight, or with too much stretch to them.

Choose pieces in sturdy fabrics like jersey, polyester, or dressy denim. They resist wrinkles so you can skip ironing.

Wrinkle-resistant fabric softeners, like Downy Enhancer, keep even more delicate fabrics looking freshly pressed.
