1. Never buy powder without testing it over your foundation first. Even if the powder is translucent, it always has some amount of color to it, and that color and its extra texture over the skin can greatly affect the appearance of your foundation. Powder should match the color of your skin (and foundation) and not change the color of either.
2. Never powder with a white, orange, pink, or coral shade of powder; it will make you look either pale or overly made-up.
3. To help prevent a caked appearance don’t forget to dab any excess oil from the face before you apply your powder during the day to touch up your makeup.
4. Do not apply more than the sheerest layer necessary to take away excess shine; the face can handle only so much powder before it starts looking thick and heavy.
5. Do not powder more than necessary during the day. Powder only once or twice a day to prevent buildup, even if you are using a pressed powder with sunscreen.
